Compensation:    From $50,362 to $52,397 per year DOE

Health Benefits:    This position receives up to $700 per month for health benefits through John Muir; life insurance; CalSTERS

Salaried/Hourly:    Salaried (position is on the John Muir Charter School payroll)

Hours:    Normally 40 hours per week

Schedule    Normally 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (exact days and times may vary according to department and agency needs)

Location:    Upper Fort Mason; also, may require visits and onsite education at nearby locations

Licenses/Certificates Required:    Valid and current California teaching credential (Single Subject in Math or Science, or Multiple Subjects); pass TB test and obtain fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice; CA Driver's license; insurability on SFCC driving insurance; First Aid/CPR must be obtained during first four months

Program Description
The San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC) is a non-profit job readiness and education program serving young adults between the approximate ages of 18 and 26 who work within crews to address community needs through service and conservation-related work. SFCC job readiness opportunities for young adults include, but are not limited to, landscaping, restoration, installing play structures at public schools and community centers, recycling, and internships. Concurrently and in partnership with the John Muir Charter School, the young adults focus on attaining their High School Diploma and/or participate in the Corps-to-Career higher education program.
Job Summary
The Full-Time Science and Math Teacher is responsible for managing and supervising a classroom of young adult students four to five days per week and to provide field education on the work sites throughout the academic year. This position assesses strengths, challenges, and opportunities of each student using student-assessment methods as prescribed by SFCC and Muir and as directed by the Academic Manager and employed by the teacher him/herself. The Full-Time Science and Math Teacher is responsible for mastering, adhering to, and implementing the policies and procedures of the SFCC Employee Manual, Corpsmember Handbook, and SFCC Respectful Workplace policy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • John Muir Charter School and SFCC Academics Program (constant - more than 66% of time): The Full-Time Science and Math Teacher is responsible for providing differentiated instruction to at-risk young adults with varied learning styles; provide practical academic learning experiences meeting the CA state standards in both High School Math and Science, and as related to life skills, leadership, community organizing, construction and other appropriate subjects; participate in curriculum development and prepare individualized lesson plans; maintain a student-grade book and use various student-assessment tools; work with each student to create his or her education goals, objectives, and education plans; ensure that students receive necessary instruction to develop the educational competencies for completion of their high school diploma in accordance with the current California State standards and framework.  Teacher is also responsible for taking initiative, accomplishing tasks sometimes outside the general duties of a teacher, and preemptively identifying additional needs of the program.
  • Supervision, Policies, and Procedures (constant - more than 66% of time): Act as a role model to other Staff and Corpsmembers; ensure that polices and procedures of both the SFCC and John Muir Charter School are strictly adhered to; administer appropriate protocols, procedures, and CM Handbook polices with Corpsmembers.
  • Administration (frequent - 34-66% of time):Complete all necessary administrative tasks and paperwork efficiently and on time; maintain and ensure discretion and confidentiality of Corpsmember information. This includes attendance tracking and grading. Will be responsible for WIA certification processes and data entry in online reporting systems, in particular Workforce Central.  Experience with electronic school databases preferred (in particular PowerSchool or PowerTeacher).
  • Communication and Relationship Building (constant - more than 66% of time): Communicate and work closely with the Associate Director of Academics and Academic Manager to comply with all applicable federal, state, and school education standards; maintain professional, open channels of communication with both Corpsmembers and Staff.
Typical Working Conditions
Typical conditions include working in an office setting; constant sitting; and frequent standing and bending.
Equipment Used
This position requires frequent operation of agency vehicles to drive to various sites and venues throughout the SF Bay Area, which requires insurability on the SFCC's driving insurance policy and the ability to operate agency vehicles and navigate by automobile throughout the SF Bay Area.
This position requires constant use of computers, telephones, photocopiers, fax machines, printers, and other electronic office equipment.
Minimum Education and Experience Required
In addition to the Licenses/Certificates/Testing requirements listed near the top of this job announcement:

  • Valid and current California teaching credential (Single Subject in Math or Science or Multiple Subjects).
  • 2 years experience in instruction of science and/or math curriculums, lesson plan preparation, delivery, and classroom management.  Experience working with the CA State Health and Life Skills Standards a plus.
  • 1 year experience engaging and motivating students in individual or small group settings .
  • Experience engaging and motivating at risk young adults in at least one of the following areas:
  • Students who may have multiple barriers and come from a wide variety of social, economic, and educational backgrounds
  • Working with and teaching young adults approximately 18-26 years old who did not complete high school previously.
  • Experience working with and teaching English Language Learners.
  • Working with Special Education populations.
  • Experience applying innovative education models and implementing e-learning technology in the classroom.
    Minimum Skills Required
    • Leadership, classroom management, conflict management and resolution skills.
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with fellow professionals.
    • Excellent problem solving skills and ability to exercise sound judgment and make effective decisions.
    • Ability to work effectively with minimum supervision and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
    • Must be proficient with using PC operating systems, including use and access of file servers.
    • Must be proficient with MS Office Suite, in particular Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel computer applications.
    • Must be proficient and comfortable with accessing and using the Internet.
    • Experience with online database and reporting systems a must (Workforce Central experience a plus).
