Full-Time or Part-Time CAHSEE Instructor/Paraprofessional - Rancho Cielo YouthBuild, Salinas
Rancho Cielo YouthBuild Program is an innovative program designed to provide youth aged 17-21 that reside in the Salinas Region with preparation leading to a high school diploma or GED.  John Muir Charter School serves two unique high school programs, the Drummond Culinary Program and YouthBuild.   Both programs serve 30 to 40 students, split into two cohorts alternating their time between classroom and respective vocation trainings.  All JMCS staff on site works collaboratively to support the success of the Rancho Cielo students and is actively engaged in the classroom; providing direct instruction, small group instruction, and providing support for credit recovery as well as administrative support as needed.   

Instructor shall report to the JMCS Site Director, the Muir Executive Director and the other Muir administrative staff.  This position is responsible for developing, planning and implementing an appropriate curriculum and instruction for young adults needing support passing the CAHSEE and GED.  This position is to provide individualized skill development in all subjects as necessary and assigned by lead teacher to prepare students to earn the high school diploma and move on to post secondary education.  Applicant should be able to prepare lessons toward these goals with minimal supervision.  The position includes responsibilities associated with a paraprofessional in education;  assisting the lead teacher and other JMCS staff in completing required JMCS and Rancho Cielo administrative responsibilities.

General Duties and Responsibilities:
The candidate we are seeking for this unique position must be able to seamlessly move from task to task as directed by the lead teacher.  The percentage of time spent in tasks will vary week to week based on needs of students and site goals set by lead teacher.
CAHSEE Instructor/Paraprofessional
Under the direction of lead teacher:

  1. Create and implement appropriate curriculum preparing students to pass the ELA and the Math CAHSEE
  2. Provide student's support in preparing for the GED, which includes developing lesson plans, working in small groups and one on one with students
  3. Identify and use appropriate tools to assess, document and report student periodic and final progress.
  4. Utilize a variety of appropriate instructional methods to address different learning styles.
  5. Work in classroom with other teachers; ability to "work the room" or co-teach when needed
  6. Assist in review and recommend necessary and appropriate materials, equipment and outside resources related to education.
  7. Participate in community service projects; attend retreats, workshops and conferences as required.
  8. Inform Case Management and other appropriate staff of student issues that affect student progress.
Paraprofessional/Administrative Support Duties
  1. Review, evaluate, monitor, report and document student attendance and progress.
  2. Maintain individual confidential student educational files including work samples, lesson plans, educational progress, attendance sheets and educational service plans.
  3. Grade student work and maintain grade book.
  4. Monitor and maintain student compliance with Rancho Cielo YouthBuild program requirements.
  5. Assist in providing supervision at Rancho Cielo classroom and training sites.
  6. Monitor and maintain Member progress in the attainment of the GED and High School Diploma.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • California teaching credential is required. Credential in English, Social Studies, Math, or Science is preferred.  Adult Education or other likewise credentials will be considered.  
  • One year of experience in academics related to preparation for high school diploma is a preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage young people from "at risk" conditions in meaningful, interesting and creative learning experiences.
  • Ability to work in a single classroom, all subjects learning environment.
  • Experience in curriculum and lesson planning and development.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to make group presentations and facilitate group activities.
  • Ability to team-teach and work effectively as a part of a team.
  • Sincere desire to assist young people to succeed, develop self-confidence and effective -leadership skills; familiarity with various challenges and issues faced by youth from low-income communities.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimum supervision and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making effective decisions and in problem solving skills.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Compensation and Benefits
Full-Time salary; $39,000-42,000 (to be determined based upon experience and qualifications) and full benefits at full time. Full time, exempt position, 40 hours per week.

Part-time salary will be $19,500-21,000.  Part-time benefits negotiable minimum of 20 hours. 

This is a non-traditional year-round position. Teachers accrue vacation time to be determined at time of hire.
