Lead Teacher/Academic Coordinator - San Diego and Imperial County Labor Council YouthBuild
The San Diego and Imperial County Labor Council YouthBuild program has partnered with John Muir Charter School to serve former high school drop-outs, ages 18 to 24, with preparation leading to a high school diploma or GED, Life Skills, Leadership Development and the opportunity to learn hands-on construction skills. In addition, participants who complete their GED or diploma, express an interest in the Construction Trades and have demonstrated a strong work ethic will be recommended for apprenticeship programs with local construction trade unions.
The program is seeking a qualified, dedicated individual to be a lead teacher/academic coordinator for educational component of the program, administered by John Muir Charter School. Preference is for a task-oriented individual passionate about growing an academic program that is dedicated to providing alternative education services to at-risk/in-risk young adults from the San Diego community.
The applicant that is hired for this position shall report to the YouthBuild Program Director, the Muir Executive Director and the Muir Southern Regional Director. Academic curriculum shall be developed and implemented in consultation with the YouthBuild Director and the Muir Director of Instruction.
The Lead Teacher/Academic Coordinator will be responsible for developing, planning and implementing an appropriate curriculum and instruction for young adults which provides individualized functional skill development in all subjects necessary to prepare students to earn their high school diploma or GED, as well as assisting in providing appropriate college preparatory information appropriate for post secondary enrollment and education. It is envisioned that the qualified candidate will be dedicated to the principle of data driven improvement, innovation and growth.

- Oversee the daily school operations, including the direct supervision of other assigned staff
- Oversight and management of other Muir/Academy teachers.
- Develop and maintain individualized learning goals for all participants
- Instruction of students across the entire curriculum of high school subjects
- Act as on-site liaison between Muir and Labor Council administrations.
- Work and coordinate with other staff to incorporate practical academic learning experiences related to life skills, leadership, vocational training and other appropriate subjects.
- Monitor and maintain student compliance with program requirements.
- Provide overall supervision at the school site.
- May assist in identifying and organizing appropriate community service projects.
- Monitor and maintain member progress in the attainment of the GED and High School Diploma.
- Prepare daily, weekly and monthly lesson plans.
- Develop plans to provide well-rounded individualized and group instruction as appropriate.
- Identify and use appropriate tools to assess, document and report student periodic and final progress.
- Utilize a variety of appropriate instructional methods to address different learning styles.
- Review, recommend and purchase necessary and appropriate materials and equipment.
- Assess student need for and provide special tutoring as necessary.
- Identify students with special needs and former special education plans, obtain past IEPs and work with the district office to provide services for identified students.
- Assist in identification of outside resources related to education.
- Identify and provide opportunities in the classroom for members to demonstrate leadership skills.
- Participate in community service projects.
- Attend retreats, workshops and conferences as required.
- Inform case managers and other appropriate staff of student issues that affect student progress
- Review, evaluate, monitor, report and document student attendance and progress.
- Maintain individual confidential student educational files including work samples, lesson plans, educational progress, attendance sheets and educational service plans.
- Maintain student grades and grade book.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- California clear teaching credential is required with more than one subject area authorization. Credential in multiple subjects is preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field.
- Experience in recruitment and managing others with specific experience leading others in an educational setting is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to engage young people from "at risk" conditions in meaningful, interesting and creative learning experiences.
- Experience working with "at risk" youth.
- Working knowledge of various educational assessment tools. Experience in administration of assessment tools is preferred and a plus.
- Experience in curriculum and lesson planning and development.
- Experience in/knowledge of developing individualized educational plans.
- Experience working with and the ability to be sensitive to a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic population.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to make group presentations and facilitate group activities.
- Ability to team-teach and work effectively as a leader of a team.

| $41,500-56,500 depending on qualifications and experience. Full medical, dental and vision benefits. This is a year-round non-traditional school year. All teachers work on 240 day contracts and accrue vacation time to be determined at time of hire.
