Compensation:    From $18 - $25 an hour

Salaried/Hourly:    Hourly (position is on John Muir Charter School payroll)

Hours:    Normally 8 hours per week

Schedule    Normally 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday (exact days and times may vary according to department and agency needs)

Department:    Corpsmember Services � Academics

Location:    Upper Fort Mason; also, may require visits and onsite education at nearby locations

Licenses/Certificates Required:    Valid and current California teaching credential (Single Subject in Math, or Multiple Subjects); pass TB test and obtain fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice; First Aid/CPR must be obtained during first four months

Program Description
The San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC) is a non-profit job readiness and education program serving young adults between the approximate ages of 18 and 26 who work within crews to address community needs through service and conservation-related work. SFCC job readiness opportunities for young adults include, but are not limited to, landscaping, restoration, installing play structures at public schools and community centers, recycling, and internships. Concurrently and in partnership with the John Muir Charter School, the young adults focus on attaining their High School Diploma and/or participate in the Corps-to-Career higher education program.
Job Summary
The Part-Time CAHSEE Math Instructor is responsible for providing intensive instruction and preparation for the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to at-risk young adults in a classroom setting. The Instructor will also provide individualized CAHSEE support to students throughout the academic year. This position assesses strengths, challenges, and opportunities of each student using student-assessment methods as prescribed by SFCC and Muir and as directed by the Academic Manager and employed by the teacher him/herself. The Part-Time CAHSEE Math Instructor is responsible for adhering to and implementing the policies and procedures of the SFCC Employee Manual, Corpsmember Handbook, and SFCC Respectful Workplace policy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • John Muir Charter School and SFCC Academics Program (constant - more than 66% of time): Part-Time Math CAHSEE Instructor is responsible for providing differentiated CAHSEE Math instruction to at-risk young adults with varied learning styles, including addressing additional needs of students. The Instructor will provide practical learning experiences in Exit Exam Math which meet the CA State Standards. Instructor will participate in curriculum development and prepare individualized lesson plans for CAHSEE Math; maintain a student-grade book and use various student-assessment tools. Teacher is responsible for planning for and facilitating CAHSEE Math Test Preparation courses in both group and individual settings as directed by the Educational Leadership team.
  • Supervision, Policies, and Procedures (constant - more than 66% of time): Act as a role model to other Staff and Corpsmembers; ensure that polices and procedures of both the SFCC and John Muir Charter School are strictly adhered to; administer appropriate protocols, procedures, and CM Handbook polices with Corpsmembers.
  • Administration (frequent - 34-66% of time):Complete all necessary administrative tasks and paperwork efficiently and on time; maintain and ensure discretion and confidentiality of Corpsmember information. This includes attendance tracking and grading.
  • Communication and Relationship Building (constant - more than 66% of time): Communicate and work closely with the Associate Director of Academics and Academic Manager to comply with all applicable federal, state, and school education standards; maintain professional, open channels of communication with both Corpsmembers and Staff.
Typical Working Conditions
Typical conditions include working in an office setting; constant sitting; and frequent standing and bending.
Equipment Used
This position requires constant use of computers, telephones, photocopiers, fax machines, printers, and other electronic office equipment.
Minimum Education and Experience Required
In addition to the Licenses/Certificates/Testing requirements listed near the top of this job announcement:

  • Valid and current California teaching credential (Single Subject in Math or Multiple Subjects).
  • 1 years experience in instruction of CAHSEE math curricula, lesson plan preparation, delivery, and classroom management.
  • 1 year experience engaging and motivating students in individual or small group settings .
  • Working with and teaching young adults approximately 18-26 years old who did not complete high school previously.
  • Experience engaging and motivating at risk young adults who may have multiple barriers and come from a wide variety of social, economic, and educational background.
  • Experience teaching English Language Learners and/or Special Education populations.
Minimum Skills Required
  • Leadership, classroom management, conflict management and resolution skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with fellow professionals.
  • Excellent problem solving skills and ability to exercise sound judgment and make effective decisions.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimum supervision and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Must be proficient with using PC operating systems, including use and access of file servers.
  • Must be proficient with MS Office Suite, in particular Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel computer applications.
  • Must be proficient and comfortable with accessing and using the Internet.
