 CCC MOTTO:

"Hard work, low pay, miserable conditions... and more!"

John Muir Charter School at the Greenwood CCC offers corpsmembers an educational program that makes a positive impact in the lives of our students, as well as the community.
About Greenwood CCC
The Greenwood California Conservation Corps is located at 4411 Hwy 193, in Greenwood, California.  It is in the foothills, above Coloma, where they discovered gold in 1848.  Georgetown is located 4 miles to the East.   Placerville is 17 miles to the South. We are 8 miles East of Cool.  If you are in Auburn head South for 7 miles on Highway 49 to Cool, then, at the blinking light, take a right onto Hwy 193.

Our campus is a residential facility for men and women age 18 - 25 with a capacity to hold 78 beds.  We are located in the pines, with plenty trees surrounding our forested campus.  It is a great place for nature lovers.  We have an average of 14 - 23 high school students that are eager to get their coveted high school diploma.  During our first year as a John Muir Charter School, 2009-2010, we graduated 8 students.

All students strive to attend class at least 10 hours a week.  Our school has consistent communication among the teacher and Corp leaders and supervisors.  We all work together to help students meet the requirements for a high school diploma.  Students get vocational education training and credit while on the job.   Students get certificates in Chain Saw Training and Falling, Emergency Camp Support, Basic Chain Saw Training, Serve Safe Training, First Aid, CPR, First Responders, and Flood Fighting Training.

We are a spiking center for 9 to 10 months a year.  All students spike.  To "spike" means to leave the residential center for seven days and camp in tents at sites where corps members build trails, clean up the environment, and clear trees. They often put in 10 hour days that start at 5:30 AM.  They become familiar with what it means to work hard.  They also come to know how to work as part of a team.  They learn the skills needed to be able to get along with others. They learn to live in a community without conflicts -learning patience and understanding different lifestyles.
