John Muir Charter School at the Los Angeles CCC offers corpsmembers an educational program that makes a positive impact in the lives of our students, as well as the community.
One of the things that makes the John Muir Charter School experience
beneficial for the students is the one-on-one interaction every student
gets with their teacher. The students appreciate the ability to work
independently, in small groups or to participate in full class direct
instruction. Our students say that the teacher is down-to-earth,
helpful when learning new things and willing to support them completely
in their pursuit of a high school diploma. Students attend a creative
writing class once a week as well as an urban gardening class with a
master gardener every week. We also offer CAHSEE preparation weekly.
Students will are prepared to continue their education at a local city
college or trade tech if they so desire.
Students in our program earn certificates in Chain Saw/Chipper and
Falling Training, Blue Card/ Defensive Driving Training, HAZWOPER,
Career Development Training, Leadership Training, First Aid, CPR, First
Responders, Alcohol and Other Drugs, Water Safety, Serve Safe, Trail
Training, Basic Security Awareness and Flood Training.
In addition, students learn and participate in Emergency Camp Support, Money Management, Material and Equipment Safety Orientation training, Conservation Awareness Program, Sexual Harassment, Decision Making, Equal Employment Opportunity, Heat Stress, Illness and Injury Prevention, Time Management, Communicable Diseases, Anger Management/ Conflict Resolution and Violence in the Workplace.
