John Muir Charter School at the Placer CCC offers corpsmembers an educational program that makes a positive impact in the lives of our students, as well as the community.
John Muir Charter School at the Placer CCC Site is a classroom where our
students can feel safe, supported and respected. We have two teachers
and a CAHSEE math tutor. In addition, we have a Career Pathways Coach
that focuses on meeting with students individually regarding their
career development, transition goals, life skills and English
remediation. We strive to provide high quality individualized
educational support for all of our students. Our students are very
diverse and come from all over the state of California. Their common
goal is to achieve their high school diploma and gain valuable work
skills. Our prior graduates have told us that they had never before
received so much help and guidance. Our current students tell us how
much they appreciate finally comprehending subjects such as math that
they have struggled with for so many years.
Our school site and the Placer CCC have a strong partnership. Our
center is a residential center so our students live, work, eat and
attend school together. The focus at the Placer Center is providing
students with training in construction and energy-related projects. The
students receive vocational education credits towards their diploma in
addition to learning job skills. The corps members are able to
participate in many trainings that are designed in collaboration with
Sierra College and the Golden Sierra Job Training Agency including
electrical training, energy auditing and the Multi-Craft Core Curriculum
required by trade unions for future employment. Students are able to
learn skills and obtain certificates for Emergency Fire Camp Support,
Chain Saw Training, Serv-Safe, First Aid/ CPR, Flood Training, Hazardous
Waste Operations and Emergency Response, Conservation Awareness, Career
Development and Leadership. Our students also participate in many
community volunteer events and recreational activities including a
basketball and softball team.
Our educational program aims to connect workplace learning with the classroom. We discuss and learn about work projects with our students and their supervisors and we use curriculum that compliments what students may be doing on the job. Together, John Muir teachers and CCC staff provide mentoring and leadership to these young adults to provide them with an opportunity for growth, development and a chance to succeed.
