The
California Conservation Corps engages young men and women in meaningful work,
public service and educational activities that assist them in becoming more
responsible citizens, while protecting and enhancing California's environment, human resources
and communities.
John Muir Charter School at the Redding CCC offers corpsmembers an educational program that makes a positive
impact in the lives of our students, as well as the community.
The Redding CCC/JMCS site has been in existence since the school's founding in 1998. The current teacher, Linda Weaver, has been there since the beginning and has participated in the school's development as an active voice at in-services and working on committee's and projects focused on the improvement of our school.
If one were to have the privilege of a bird's eye view of the Redding California Conservation Corps/John Muir Charter School, they would see a staff of individuals dedicated to the success of each corps member/student. These young people, between the ages eighteen to twenty-five, are the typical age of a traditional college age "student".
We, the C's and JMCS, offer so much to these young college age students who typically were not successful in school. This partnership creates a powerful way to learn. Through the C's they learn job skills, work ethics, leadership skills and the meaning of integrity. They are surrounded by positive role models who are simply leading by example. Those who succeed have the opportunity to earn scholarships of approximately of $13,000.
Many educational opportunities at the California Conservation Corps
Here at John Muir Charter School, they learn for the first time in their life they can shed their "negative label" and gain a new positive sense of self. They learn to plan and have clarity regarding their educational intentions. They also learn that educational success is achieved by working harder than they ever have in their lives. They learn that nothing is impossible, even the cherished high school diploma. Walking across the stage at graduation, they know that they have earned their diploma.
JMCS educational success is achieved by understanding how each student perceives and learns based on their own learning skills. Daily in class, they are exposed to one on one learning situations, small group or the mandatory writing classes. Each student is assessed individually and given the opportunity to succeed when they accept that here is something they may not have encountered before in their twelve year school career. It is a privilege to be a Redding John Muir Charter School Graduate. Please note that the Redding students have consistently excelled, which is reflected by their high GED and California High School Exit Exam scores.
"And so the C's and the Charter School worked together as a team towards my education. The C's made sure that I attended classes and my teacher gave me a chance to work towards my high school diploma. Without their teamwork I would not be the success that I am a today." Ricky Lane 2005 Valedictorian
