Mission

To provide a young adult development program that integrates education, job skills training and work experience through conservation projects and service opportunities that benefit the community.

Educating Students Since 1984

The Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps (SRCC) is a nonprofit organization serving Sacramento's young adults. The SRCC was established in 1984 by the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce to provide opportunity for educational achievement and paid work-experience. Emphasis is placed on individual and team leadership, personal goal setting, citizenship and other job training skills. The corpsmembers are representatives of our diverse community. Most participants are economically, educationally and socially challenged. In their words, "At the corps we are learning, earning and serving."

Learning
The integration of classroom and work-site learning is scheduled five days a week. Corpsmembers without high school diplomas are enrolled in the John Muir Charter School campus at the SRCC center with the goal of completing a diploma.

Corpsmembers with high school diplomas are enrolled in on-site ROP computer/business technology classes. Once the corpsmember has earned a high school diploma and has completed computer science and career development classes, she/he is encouraged to enroll at a postsecondary and/or vocational school. Scholarships are available.
Earning
Each corpsmember is a part of a crew and works with that crew four days a week. An understanding of the world of work is created when they experience a real work site and interact with staff members and coworkers. This nurtures the young adults' confidence, skills and trust while providing them with a paycheck.
Serving

The SLCC seeks partnerships with local, state and private organizations to provide ongoing and varied work experience for the corpsmember projects. Projects include:

  • creek cleaning
  • general public works projects
  • sandbagging
  • emergency response
  • tree planting
  • wetland maintenance
  • post and cable fencing
  • vernal pool protection
  • beverage container recycling
  • neighborhood cleanup
  • park irrigation installation
  • minor construction
  • weatherization
