| Sequoia Community Corps. seeks to strengthen youth, families and communities through education, employment training, youth development, mentoring, leadership building, job creation, environmental stewardship and other strategies that support self-reliant families and caring communities.
|
At Sequoia Community Corps., corpsmembers receive an excellent education from wonderful teachers and other leaders who train, challenge and equip them for the future.
Corpsmembers develop self-confidence during their time in the Corps, but they are often wary of leaving the positive environment they have come to trust in the Corps. Transitioning corpsmembers into post-Corps placements can be a challenge, as the change presents self-limiting fears and self-doubt.
We have met this challenge by implementing strategies that progressively move corpsmembers towards self-reliance and build self-confidence. For example, all corpsmembers receive job placement assistance through Community Service and Employment Training Workforce Investment Act programs. As corpsmembers prepare to leave the Corps, they are partnered with professional job developers and attend a series of workshops. These motivating workshops help them develop effective resumes, improve interviewing techniques, gain valuable employment skills and finalize an exit strategy.

Our corpsmembers provide hands-on energy conservation experiences to elementary school children throughout Tulare, Kern and Kings Counties. This program is in partnership with the California Conservation Corps and the California Public Utilities Commission.
Corpsmembers have also planted trees at a migrant housing center in Kern County.
