The Youth Center offers services in an LGBTQ+ safe and affirming environment and serves as an entry point to assist youth making the transition from homelessness to housing. The John Muir Charter School is housed under the auspices of The Youth Center where the school provides a supportive and joyful WASC approved high school diploma program. In addition, the Youth Center provides a number of services including meals, clothing, support groups, a GED and college prep program, an employment preparation, training and placement program, case management, counseling, a crisis shelter and a transitional living program (TLP). The community-based programs include services for youth at-home, in school or in systems of care.
Our school is a unique one-room high school where students are provided an individualized education plan developed in partnership with the high school teacher. Students have the opportunity to be in the academic classroom 15-30 hours per week while receiving additional job skills, vocational training, and wrap-around services through the LA LGBT center programs. JMCS provides curriculum and support, and the instructor creates a dynamic, engaging, rigorous, and supportive experience for our students. The LA LGBT staff will provide career development training, social services, and other activities. JMCS staff work collaboratively with the LA LGBT Center to support the success of the students. Our innovative education programs are designed to provide youth ages 16-25 with an engaging educational experience that meets individual student needs. JMCS combines direct instruction, project work, credit recovery, life skills, work readiness training and other academic experiences into a highly personalized high school classroom. This school works in partnership with youth to co-design their academic experience. Join us!
