MISSION
The California Conservation Corps engages young men and women in meaningful work, public service and educational activities that assist them in becoming more responsible citizens, while protecting and enhancing California’s environment, human resources and communities.
The John Muir Charter School Fortuna supports education for the California Conservation Corps’ watershed restoration program. The watershed restoration program, which recently celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary, protects vital salmon habitat by stabilizing streams channels, restoring eroded riparian habitat by planting trees, and repairing damaged trails and roads that create erosion. The center also specializes in exotic plant species removal and the restoration of native plants and animals to local wild lands.

The Muir Charter School supports the restoration program by integrating education with fieldwork. Teachers accompany students on extended field projects (spikes) to provide education services no matter where the student may be working. The charter school also provides oversight for the salmon-in the-classroom program. Corpmembers annually raise 60 salmon and steelhead fry from eggs derived from wild salmonids. When the fry are large enough corpsmembers release them into their native streams to begin their migration to the ocean and the life of an adult 50-pound salmon. Our school also features a 48 track recording studio and art program.
