The
Pomona center opened in 1982 on the site of Lanterman Developmental Center,
a State of California care facility for the developmentally disabled. The Pomona
Center originally occupied two buildings-(known as (8) and (9)- at the Pomona
site. The Pomona Center was relocated from the San Gabriel Valley.
When the center opened it was a residential center and had a population of over
100 Corps members. It was a full-service center with a working kitchen and a
cook staff of (2). Originally, the education program consisted of preparing
students for the GED examination through the Pomona Adult School.
John Muir Charter School began offering classes in 2000. The first high school
graduating class of 2001 boasted 10 students, RJ Guess was the teacher.
In 2004 the Pomona Center closed its residential component. The center has
gone from a high population of 125 Corps members in 2000 to its present
average population of 50 Corps members. Pomona is a satellite center of
the Inland Center in San Bernardino.
The Pomona Center has held graduation ceremonies for (55) students since
2001. |
